Immediately on the heel of a stellar turnout for Evangelicals for Life and March for Life in spite of snowy and freezing weather, and Sanctity of Life Sunday last weekend, Monday appeared to usher several blows for those who oppose abortion. First, the Harris County District Attorney’s office announced that a regional franchise of Planned Parenthood, Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, has been surprisingly cleared following a two-month-long investigation into the harvesting and selling of tissue from aborted fetuses and that instead two undercover videographers associated with the Center for Medical Progress were indicted for wrongdoing. In addition, the Supreme Court blocked North Dakota’s fetal heartbeat law from taking affect by announcing it will not review a lower court’s decision. What are we to do in light of these apparent set backs? Here are four actions for every believer of Jesus Christ:
- Do not become discouraged and retreat. Rather, continue to proclaim God’s Word.
Peter and John give us a great example from the early days of the church in Acts 4:19-20.
But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”
Peter and John were confronted by religious leaders for healing a man in the name of Jesus and for proclaiming the Gospel. They were placed in custody, commanded to stop preaching and healing, and threatened. Their reply was not to retreat, but to boldly continue proclaiming God’s message. Regardless of court decisions, cultural pressure, or the spin of biased news media, we are to speak God’s Word, proclaiming His value for life. There have been 58.6 million abortions in the U.S. since 1973. The church cannot let this continue. As Dr. Frank Page, president of the SBC executive committee, states, “babies’ lives matter.” We are to continue to proclaim the truth that man is made in the imago Dei at the moment of conception.
- Be wise in selecting government leaders.
Wisdom literature in Scripture is replete with verses admonishing God’s people to make wise rather than foolish decisions. Wise decisions uphold God’s will, truths, and biblical ethics. Regardless of how a political candidate may align with preferences, charisma, and experience, if the candidate supports abortion it would be unwise to vote for that person. Why unwisely vote for someone who so egregiously defies God’s view of sanctity of life? Scripture and history provide cogent examples of God removing His blessing from a nation who unwisely selects a government official that does not follow God’s Word, who does not fear God (2 Chronicles 19:6-7). A comparison chart of 2016 presidential candidates may be downloaded here, describing each candidate’s view on sanctity of life and abortion. We are blessed to live in a democracy where we can vote. Vote wisely.
- Get involved personally and as a church.
Matthew 5:13-16 records Jesus stating,
You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
The only way to be salt and light to this decaying and dying world is through our direct involvement and incarnational living. There are several ways to actively become involved, including:
- Assist with a crisis pregnancy center where you can offer the hope of Christ and help protect the not-yet-born.
- Join a local advocacy group that is driven by biblical principles, such as Locals for Life.
- Create a pregnancy care center by partnering your church with the North American Mission Board.
Above all pray. Pray for this nation and its leaders and courts. Pray for the church to continue to stand against the atrocity of abortion. Pray for the safety of not-yet-born children and grandchildren.
